Skin Irritation Toxicity Studies

Skin Irritation Toxicity Studies

Skin irritation tests can determine if a chemical or substance can cause reversible damage to the skin, and can be used for regulatory hazard classification and labeling.

These tests involve applying a test substance to shaved or abraded skin on an animal, and then monitoring the animal for signs of irritation over several days. Signs of irritation include redness, swelling, and blistering. The severity of the effects is then scored using a standardized system.
